LA ESPERANZA DE VIDA SIGUE SUBIENDO EN EUROPA

Informe de la CE muestra una mejora de cinco años desde 1990

La esperanza de vida en Europa se ha incrementado en más de cinco años desde 1990, según un informe publicado por la Comisión Europea y la Organización para la Cooperación y el Desarrollo Económico (OCDE).

La tercera edición de Health at Glance: Europa presenta información sobre la salud y los sistemas de salud en 35 países europeos, entre ellos los Estados miembros de la UE, países candidatos y la Asociación Europea de Libre Comercio (AELC).

Se encontró que la esperanza de vida sigue aumentando, alcanzando una media de 79,2 años en promedio en 2012 - 82,2 años para las mujeres y 76,1 años para los hombres -. Esto representa un aumento de 5,1 años desde 1990.

Para las mujeres, la esperanza de vida más alta es la de España (85,5 años), mientras que Suecia fue la mayor para los hombres (79,9 años).

El número de años de vida saludable, que se define como el número de años de la vida libres de limitación de la actividad, a los 65 años en 2012 fue de 8,5 años para los hombres y 8,7 años para las mujeres. La cifra fue mayor en los países nórdicos - Suecia, Dinamarca, Noruega e Islandia - y en Malta, mientras que la menor se encontraba en la Eslovaquia, tanto para hombres como para mujeres.

Las personas con 65 años de edad en Suecia pueden esperar vivir alrededor de las tres cuartas partes de sus años restantes de vida sin limitaciones a sus actividades habituales, mientras que en Eslovaquia la cifra es menos de un cuarto.

El informe también proporciona datos sobre el gasto en salud en Europa. El gasto medio de la salud en la UE fue de 8,7% del PIB en 2012, mientras que el gasto en salud per cápita tiene una disminución en promedio un 0,6% anual desde 2009.

Vitenis Andriukaitis, comisario de la UE para la salud y la seguridad alimentaria, y Ángel Gurría, secretario general de la organización para la cooperación y el desarrollo económico, emitieron una declaración conjunta sobre las cifras.

Ellos dijeron: "Los países que redujeron el gasto en salud hicieron cortes principalmente sobre los honorarios pagados a los proveedores de salud, el gasto farmacéutico y la fuerza de trabajo de salud y salarios. Sin embargo, en relación con el personal de salud en la UE, desde 2000, el número de médicos por habitante ha aumentado en todos los países de la UE a excepción de Francia, donde se ha mantenido estable, y el número de enfermeras en ejercicio se ha incrementado en todos los países miembros, menos en dos estados".

LIFE EXPECTANCY CONTINUES TO RISE IN EUROPE

EC report shows five-year improvement since 1990

Life expectancy in Europe has increased by over five years since 1990, according to a report published by the European Commission and the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD).

The third edition of Health at Glance: Europe presents information on health and healthcare systems in 35 European countries including EU member states, candidate countries and European Free Trade Association (EFTA) countries.

It found that life expectancy continues to increase, reaching a median 79.2 years on average in 2012 - 82.2 years for women and 76.1 years for men. This is an increase of 5.1 years since 1990.

For women, life expectancy was the highest in Spain (85.5 years), while it was the highest in Sweden for men (79.9 years).

The number of healthy life years, defined as the number of years of life free of activity limitation, at age 65 in 2012 was 8.5 years for men and 8.7 years for women. The figure was greatest in the Nordic countries – Sweden, Denmark, Norway and Iceland – and in Malta, whereas the shortest was in the Slovakia for both men and women.

65-year-olds in Sweden can expect to live around three-quarters of their remaining years of life without limitations to their usual activities, while in Slovakia the figure is less than a quarter.

The report also provided data on health spending in Europe. Average health spending in the EU was 8.7% of GDP in 2012, while health spending per capita has decrease on average by 0.6% per year since 2009.

Vytenis Andriukaitis, EU commissioner for health and food safety, and Angel Gurria, secretary general of the organisation for economic co-operation and development, released a joint statement on the figures.

They said: “The countries that reduced health spending made cuts mainly to fees paid to health providers, pharmaceutical spending and health work force and salaries. However, regarding the health workforce in the EU, since 2000, the number of doctors per capita has increased in all EU countries except for France where it has remained stable, and the number of practising nurses has increased in all but two member states”.
